Office of the General Counsel

The Citadel’s Office of the General Counsel provides advice and representation to the Board of Visitors, the college, its constituent units, and its employees and student leaders while acting on the college’s behalf.  The General Counsel advises The Citadel’s administration on a broad range of initiatives, policy matters and issues.  In addition, the Office of the General Counsel oversees litigation conducted by outside counsel, conducts contract review, and provides education programs and materials on legal issues.  The role of the Office of the General Counsel is to prevent or minimize legal risks in the performance of the daily business of the college.  The office is comprised of Mark C. Brandenburg, General Counsel, and his paralegal, Barbara L. Hickson, who also acts as the Freedom of Information Act Officer.

The Citadel’s General Counsel does not provide legal advice or representation to individual faculty, staff or students in connection with personal legal matters.
